Ankara Cable Car Station Roofs

The Ankara Telpher (Cable Car) System, connecting the Yenimahalle metro station with Şentepe, stands as a groundbreaking and innovative project with several notable features. As the longest urban cable car system in Eurasia at the time it was built, spanning 3,257 meters, it proudly holds the title of Turkey’s “first cable car built for Passenger Transport Purposes,” offering seamless connectivity without requiring passengers leaving the metro to wait.

With a capacity to transport 2,400 people per hour in one direction, the system boasts 106 cabins moving simultaneously across four stops, with a cabin arriving at each station every 15 seconds. Our contribution to this transformative project involved delivering static projects for the roofs of all four stations. Despite distinct designs for each station, a common ribbed white steel motif unifies their structural aesthetics. Thoroughly controlled connections were established to ensure robustness against vertical and horizontal loads, encompassing dead loads, roof live loads, and wind loads. Station 3 in particular, notable for its dual role as a parking garage and workshop with a transit platform, demanded meticulous structural considerations.

Beyond its immediate functionality, the Ankara Cable Car System sets a precedent for future system designs. Its originality and inspirational qualities make it a benchmark for smart designers, shaping the way for innovative urban transportation solutions and leaving a lasting legacy for decades to come.
